Agency hunts down job opportunities in energy

David Parker, Calgary Herald
Thursday, April 24, 2014

Kris Rudy was raised in a southern Manitoba farming community with a strong work ethic and an even stronger determination to build something he believed in.

A typical farm boy, he loved machines and especially riding them, which took him on the dirtbike racing circuit for 10 years. When the time came to settle down to something more long lasting, he moved to Calgary and began selling bikes for Blackfoot Motosports.

Rudy's sales skills were noted and he was approached by a head hunter to work for Auto Farm, a company based in Silicon Valley that provided GPS technology that allowed tractors to be precision steered.

Rudy became district territory manager for Western Canada and all went well until the company lost U.S. government funding and his aspiring sales career came to an abrupt end.

That was 10 years ago, and he was soon talking with a friend who had a recruitment agency about new prospects. After three interviews, Rudy was persuaded to join the firm in a sales position and enjoyed making a difference in people's lives.

Ever the entrepreneur, Rudy made the decision in 2008 to break away and start his own firm and Hunting Recruitment was born.

A one-person agency armed with a telephone in a business centre, but with lots of energy, Rudy decided to focus strictly on the oil and gas industry and started calling former clients. He logged 81 cold calls the first day and 102 the next.

It was not perfect timing for the new venture as the market was down and people were losing their jobs. Undeterred, Rudy made appointments with key decision makers to find out who they might be looking for when the expected turnaround happened.
Kris Rudy began Hunting Recruitment in Calgary when times were tough in the Canadian oil and gas industry but has persevered to the point where he is now expanding his agency into the United States.

He researched companies to understand their business and discovered there was never a hiring freeze for good people. Rudy says he also had the good fortune of being introduced to executive coach Jan Eden, whom he says has helped him immensely in creating his boutique, building his brand and introducing him to the right network of business people in the energy industry.

Today, Rudy has a staff of three and still concentrates on the oil and gas industry in four disciplines: engineering, geo-sciences, health and safety and sales. He has built a tremendous network of 'foot soldiers' throughout the province who keep him informed of middle management to executive position vacancies. Eden also suggested Rudy spread his wings so that when the Alberta breakup occurs he could use his expertise and network to help companies in the United States.

He heard of a Texas company that was for sale and boldly phoned the owner to ask for advice. It was a good move as Rudy learned that business had started as a two-man operation, growing to a company with 70 staff and revenues of $14 million.

The advice he received was to get into the U.S. market so that Hunting could be busy all year. Rudy started phoning around and he has just returned from a visit to Houston with contracts and many good handshakes.

He also paid to register with Oil & Gas Job Search a U.K.-based firm that specializes in energy recruitment, to have access to its client list and be able to post his positions on its website. It also has provided him with three contracts to date and brought his name to a worldwide audience.
